Hands on with the Nyko Type Pad for the Wii

USB Gadgets 1 Comment »

wii_typepadpro_01The Nyko Type Pad for the Wii addresses a problem that you may or may not have. If you have ever used your Wii to surf the Net with the Opera browser or the Wii friend messenger, then you know how annoying it is to type text with just a Wiimote.

If you haven’t, this is what it is like: The keyboard appears on the screen, but you have to point at each individual letter, number, or symbol with theWiimote. Yes, it is a mind-numbingly terrible toil.

This is why Nyko invented the Type Pad, a fully QWERTY keyboard for the Wii. It is worth having for all sorts of Wii apps. For example, I use YouTube on the Wii a lot, and it is far easier to type in my searches with this Type Pad.

As you can see from the picture, the Wiimote is designed to fit in the Type Pad and stays in by attaching with the port on the end. Unfortunately, having the Wiimote attached is not enough to get the Type Pad working. The user is required to attach a USB dongle to the Wii itself, and this is how it syncs with the console.

The best part is that no batteries are required. It costs about $29.99, can be purchased now on the Nyko site.

Corsair’s 128GB Flash Voyager GTR thumb drive takes USB 2.0 to new heights

USB Gadgets No Comments »

flash-voyager-gtrWho needs USB 3.0 adapters when you’ve got Corsair, right? In a feat of engineering that can only be described as earth-shattering (or supercalifragilistic, if you prefer), said outfit has somehow created a USB 2.0 flash drive that not only beats the competition in head-to-head speed tests, but obliterates it. The 128GB Flash Voyager GTR utilizes a fancy quad-channel architecture in order to deliver read speeds up to 34MB/sec and write speeds up to 28MB/sec, which is around six times faster than some mysterious competitor that the company pit its drive against. There’s no mention of a price or release just yet, but at least you can put off the inevitable leap to SuperSpeed USB for a few more months, right?

KeyChain USB Emergency DC Battery Charger

Digital Camera, PC Gadgets, USB Gadgets No Comments »

charger

Should you ever run into a situation where you are in dire need of your camera, this USB device could come to your rescue.  When your camera battery is dead you may be able to just plug it in and charge it up again.  However, for those times that you just happen to not have the charger around this battery charger can fix things up again.  Since it’s just a keychain, as long as you have your keys on you the device will be nearby at all times.

The little green charger can be plugged into your USB port and then attached to the battery of your camera.  You will also get the choice to include an AC adapter in the deal, but that will of course cost you a little extra.  It’s supposed to work with most brands of DC Lithium batteries.  It may work a little better with a smaller camera though than it would a DSLR one.  You can purchase just the charger for $11.90 and then if you want both the charger and the adapter it will all together cost $14.90.  You can pick one up through Gadget Brando.
