Apple smartphone market claims based on “a very limited report”

Uncategorized No Comments »

After research firm NPD reported yesterday that Android had overtaken Apple’s iPhone OS and clinched the second place spot in the US smartphone market, the Cupertino company’s PR team have come out fighting.  According to Apple spokesperson Natalie Harrison, “This is a very limited report on 150,000 US consumers responding to an online survey and does not account for the more than 85 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide.”

droid-iphone-doc-r3media-gadgetpeek-300x178

“IDC figures show that iPhone has 16.1 percent of the smartphone market and growing,” Harrison continues, “far outselling Android on a worldwide basis. We had a record quarter with iPhone sales growing by 131 percent and with our new iPhone OS 4.0 software coming this summer, we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”  NPD had concluded that Apple had 21-percent of the smartphone OS market share, while Android had edged ahead with 28-percent and RIM’s BlackBerry OS maintained the lead with 36-percent.

Of course, as we mentioned yesterday – and indeed NPD drew attention to – the rise in Android popularity certainly wasn’t hurt by Verizon and others pushing handsets running the open-source OS in their promotions, such as offering a “free” second device for every one bought.  That Android, available on numerous devices, should eventually overtake the number of iPhone OS smartphones around seems obvious; frankly we’re just glad to have choice in the market.

Apple Launching New iPhone? iPhone Sale On List Price Begins

Uncategorized No Comments »

iphone3gbigIs Apple planning to launch a new version of the much popular iPhone? Well, as the news leaked online with Apple’s plan to offer the iPhone on its list price, we were pretty much confused as to why this step has been taken. Could it be due to the reason it needs to sell the stock fast and bring in its latest gadget? Or it can also be of an internal news report about some competitor bringing a better smartphon

Apple’s iPhone would start selling at the list price without the contract of AT&T on stores as well as on its website. Upon reading this, most of the users were of the view that the phones would be sold unlocked, but that is not happening. Apple would start selling the iPhone 3G 8GB model for a list price of $499, while the iPhone 3GS 16GB version would start selling at $599 and 32GB model at $699, respectively.

Some even took this as another Rumor but upon confirming at a local Apple store, iPhones were being sold at the list price to customers without the AT&T contract. Customers are allowed to buy one iPhone per person, per day.

Another source revealed that the iPhone without contract and on list price has been launched to keep in view the gray export market of iPhone in countries worldwide

Cell phones latest tool to beat HIV-AIDS in Africa

Uncategorized No Comments »

159891_news_imageLAGOS : Mobile phones may be a key weapon in the war against HIV and AIDS in Africa, says to the UNAIDS chief.

The relatively new technology has a role to play in a continent plagued by inadequate health centres and dilapidated infrastructure, said Michel Sidibe, the executive director of the United Nations AIDS agency.

“You can talk about different policies, about capacity building, but you can’t beat this kind of epidemic with facility-based approach only,” he added.

A major mobile telephone operator in Nigeria already runs a toll-free call scheme that links callers to counsellors on HIV-AIDS concerns.

“It’s a fascinating initiative,” said Sidibe.

“Its advantage is that you don’t have to move from your place to a centre where… you may be stigmatised.

“You have free communication and quality advice, which can help you take a decision.”

With basic intensive training and armed with mobile phones, local community or village workers could be a part of the health service delivery system, he said.

For despite the resources poured in years into Sub-Saharan Africa to combat HIV-AIDS, the region remains the world’s most heavily affected, accounting for 67 percent of HIV infections, according to UNAIDS’ own figures.

“You need first to look at a community-based approach, tap on non-conventional facilities,” Sidibe told AFP during a recent trip to Nigeria.

It was time that Africa, saddled with a myriad of economic, political and social woes, got back to basics, he argued.

“I don’t think in any of our African countries we will be able to wait to have professionals, or to have enough of those people.” “It is time to reinforce our capacity to use the modern technology differently,” he said.

Africa, a continent with one of the highest numbers with access to cellular phones, should take advantage of the digital revolution to reach out widely, he said.

“It’s something we need to start replicating in Africa, remember we have more mobile phones in African than in north America,” he added.

Nigeria has more than 70 million cellphone line subscribers: about one line for every two people.

A pilot project using cellphones is underway in the Nigeria’s northern Kaduna State and southwestern Ondo State.

Village workers — who have barely been through secondary school — have been trained to identify symptoms of minor ailments.

They tour villages examining patients and use their mobile phones to call up trained medical workers at a major referral centre to get diagnosis and prescriptions dictated over the phone.

“Community health workers go out with a mobile phone connected to a central referral hospital, can take temperatures… and doctors at the referral units advise on drugs to administer,” said Sidibe.

“Using all these types of approaches can help us improve information systems and expand delivery by reaching the poor in the community,” he said.

Despite prevention measures, which he said had helped avert 400,000 new infections in the past eight years on the continent, sub-Saharan Africa had the highest number of new infections in 2008.

The rate runs at 71 percent according to UNAIDS.

Most of those infected were sex workers, drug users and homosexual males.

About three million Nigerians, or just under five percent of Africa’s most populous nation are infected with HIV.

Sidibe said he visited Nigeria and South Africa because the two economic giants account for more than 50 percent of all HIV cases in Africa.

Starting from the Apple I and leading up to the new iPad.

Uncategorized No Comments »

San Francisco 3D design and visualization studio Transparent House has created a visualization entitled “Anatomy of Apple Design” as a tribute 34 years of Apple design, starting from the Apple I and leading up to the new iPad. The studio used Autodesk 3ds Max and Chaos Group V-Ray to develop two minute video, which took around ten days to finish as a completely artificial but photorealistic rendering. The video jumps from the 1976 Apple I to the original 1985 Macintosh, skipping the company’s breadwinning Apple II series and its first significant flop, the Apple III. It presents the 1989 Macintosh Portable, 1991 PowerBook, and 1993 Newton Message Pad, skipping generations of desktop Macs (including the iconic iMacs and the elegant but slow selling Cube) to highlight the clamshell 1999 iBook and white 2006 MacBook, but not the Titanium PowerBook nor other pro notebooks. The visualization highlights the 2007 iPhone and the new iPad, but skips the iPod line and other current products such as Apple TV. “We wanted to show the products in Apple history that in our opinion were best related to the nature of the iPad,” the group explains on its Vimeo page. “There were also time limitations – we just couldn’t get every product in.” Direct link to YouTube.
