Apple iPad outselling entire Mac rang

Apple effect own PC sales by trying to change the future of computing

apple-ipad-official_610_w300With just one week to go until the Apple iPad finally hits UK shelves, figures from the US have been revealed showing that the ultra-hyped tablet is shifting more units than all Mac models combined.

The must-have gadget of 2010 is still being outsold by the Apple iPhone, however.

The figures compiled by RBC Capital Markets’ analyst Mike Abramsky claim that the iPad sold around 200,000 units per week in its opening quarter, over 90,000 more per week than the entire Mac range.

Whilst tablets claim to be the future of portable computing, Apple’s tablet device still has a way to go to knock their pocket powerhouse, the iPhone, from its lofty perch. Apple is reportedly selling in the region of 246,000 of their smartphones on a weekly basis.

The iPad could prove too popular for its own good though as Cupertino has admitted struggling to meet demand for the product.

Following a month-long delay on the international rollout, Apple have also recently further delayed the shipping of pre-ordered iPads to UK customers from next Friday’s launch date, 28th May, by ten days to June 7th.

Despite the postponed distribution of pre-ordered iPads, UK Apple stores will stock the device, good news for people looking to pick one up in person.

The iPad enters the kitchen

iPad No Comments »
We’ve seen the iPad make a bold entry into your car and even take the place of something as indispensable as an artist’s canvas. But then the awesome gadget has only got started and its entry into the kitchen isn’t really a surprise. So we have come upon a video of the iPad having made it into a kitchen cabinet thus helping homemakers with some tasks such as watching the news while cooking, probably read up and search some new recipes and even hearing music. Of course, there’s a sure shot chance of you either messing your screen up with soiled hands or getting your iPad charred in the heat of the kitchen.

The iPad kitchen cabinet was made and demonstrated by Brett Terpstra. It’s quite a good idea but then very few people would like to endanger their lovely new toys in places as hostile (to technology) as kitchens.

iPad WiFi fix promised in future firmware

iPad No Comments »

iPad’s temperamental WiFi has already been fingered as a DHCP issue – temporarily fixable by power cycling the wireless or the tablet itself – but it seems Apple themselves are readying what will hopefully be a more permanent fix.  The company’s two support pages for the iPad WiFi issue (here and here) have been updated with the promise that “Apple will also address remaining Wi-Fi connectivity issues with a future iPad software update.”

apple_ipad_3g_management-gadgetpeek-300x92

The exact nature of the software update is unclear, but assuming the DHCP explanation is accurate it would seem likely that they’d be looking to prevent the iPad from allowing its IP lease to expire when in certain standby conditions.  IT managers at Princeton University discovered that the iPad would sometimes attempt to continue using the same IP address despite whichever router assigned it no longer seeing it as valid (and, potentially, already having assigned it to a different user).

Lenovo IdeaPad U160, U460 & U460s intro latest Core i3/i5/i7 ULV CPUs

Laptops, iPad No Comments »

The IdeaPad Z series aren’t the only mainstream notebooks Lenovo have to announce this morning; the company has also taken the wraps off of the new Lenovo IdeaPad U series.  Admittedly the new IdeaPad U160, U460 and U460s aren’t quite as interesting as the U1 Hybrid, but the 11.6-inch U160 and 14-inch U460 and U460s do slide in at under an inch in thickness while still packing Intel’s new Core and Core ULV low-power processors.

There are multiple configurations for the three new models, with a choice of new ULV CPUs including the Core i3-330UM (1.2GHz), Core i5-430UM (1.2GHz), 1.06GHz Core i5-520UM (1.06GHz), Core i5-540UM (1.2GHz), Core i7-620UM (1.06GHz) and Core i7-640UM (1.6GHz) for the U160 and U460s, as well as standard voltage processors on the U460.  All get WiFi and Bluetooth, and the U160 is 2.9lbs while the U460/U460s are 3.8lbs.

Lenovo reckon the U series look like a closed book in profile, and while we’re not entirely convinced we’ll admit they do look quite striking (especially the U160 in red).  Connectivity includes HDMI, VGA, the usual bevy of USB 2.0 and ethernet, and the three models will arrive from June priced from $699.

iPad News: Apple Adds 30,000 Free Books, Paid Titles For $9.99

iPad No Comments »

iPad-free-booksGreat news for the upcoming iPad users. Apple today announced the addition of more than 30,000 book titles which have been added to the database and would be available for free in Apple’s iBookstore. All e-books will have the contribution from Project Gutenberg’s free digital library. Some of the top publishers have also announced the addition to the iBookstore but available for a simple fee.

Project Gutenberg, which is a volunteer supported project which a certain group of people bring efforts to digitize literature to encourage the formulation of e-Books. It has a database of more than 30,000 books which have been carefully digitized and displayed in a respectable form in various formats. The team announced the contribution of its library to iPad users for free.

All e-Books from the Project Gutenberg library would be DRM-free while paid titles would be available in Apple’s FairPlay DRM.

Apple has committed and give their word, to bring free titles to the iPad. This promise becomes reality with over 30,000 titles already added and that too for free. In the meanwhile, other publishers are ready to post paid e-books but it looks as if before we see the presence of any other paid publisher coming forward, theiBookstore library would be in full stock.

After receiving their iPad, all the user needs to do is visit the Apple App Store and download iBooks free of charge. On the other hand, we did hear something old and something which books publishers already have an issue about.Apple plans to tag the paid titles at $9.99. This price issue has already brought some major issues with Amazon’s Kindle and there seems to be some eyebrows already raised.

But a close source told that Apple has already negotiated with the publishers to launch a special price as the company launches its first ever iPad edition.
